Icon Mother of God of Kazan - Russia 18th century

Ancient Russian icon made in tempera on wood, representing the Mother of God of Kazan, whose veneration dates back to 1579 when it was discovered, in extraordinary circumstances, by a girl from Kazan in the aftermath of a terrible fire that had hit the city. The faces of the Virgin and the Child are faithful to tradition, as is the entire setting of the composition with the Mother holding her Son Pantocrator. On the left edge is represented St. Pelagia. The Mother of God of Kazan is also known as the protector of the hearth and was given as a gift to young newlyweds.
